Characterized by rich forests, rugged coastline and green rolling hills, the splendor of this beautiful region easily attracted early settlers. The Pequot Indians were the first inhabitants of the region and were the first people with whom Adrian Block, a Dutch explorer encountered when he landed along the coast in 1614. By 1637 however, the tribe had essentially dispersed with the arrival of a steady stream of settlers. With the arrival of John Winthrop Jr., Groton began to grow. In 1646 Winthrop built the Pequot Plantation at the mouth of the Thames River that drew commerce into the town. In 1705 the small town included enough inhabitants to officially incorporate and Groton was born. Choosing to name the town after his estate in England, Winthrop continued to be one of Groton’s most influential citizens. By the mid 1700’s Groton found it’s calling and redefined itself as a center of maritime trade and shipbuilding. Today Groton covers an area of over 38 square miles and is home to over 43,000 residents.

By 1653 the area had been “discovered” by European merchants who recognized the economic potential of the tiny seaport and began to settle the region in earnest. By 1836 Ledyard was a teeming port town and became included as a part of the new town of Groton. As the town grew, Ledyard eventually stood alone and became independent of its nearest neighbor. Insurance >Do You Need Mortgage Protection
If you have a mortgage on your home, you may have received several offers from insurance companies that sell coverage to pay off your mortgage in the event you die unexpectedly. Although insurance in general is a good idea, mortgage insurance is usually a poor value in most cases.
If you read the large print, it appears that the policy will protect your family if you die before your mortgage is paid off. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork, have a physical exam, and pay a little more each month. The fine print, however, may limit the coverage relating to accidental death. If there are two people on the deed of trust, the policy may pay only half if one of them dies.
When considering mortgage insurance, call a good insurance agent before you send in your forms. Insurance experts usually advise against separate policies to cover various contingencies. A regular term life insurance policy equal to the amount of your mortgage will probably offer you a lot more coverage for your money.
